This Sports Portraiture painting project commemorates a 25th Anniversary - the Dons European Cup Winners' Cup win in 1983. An edition of 250 Limited Edition Prints were issued as a souvenir of the event. The first 125 are signed by all the playing squad plus Sir Alex Ferguson and Archie Knox -19 signatures in all - the balance of 125 are signed and stamped by me and come with a Certificate of Authenticity. As a life long Dons fan I was delighted to have the opportunity to paint a picture to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their greatest triumph. I have to thank Aberdeen Journals and Pittodrie for supplying the reference photographs mainly via AFC archivist Kevin Stirling. The only stipulation I had was to include a goal from the Waterschei and Bayern Munich fixtures. This I did along with the two goals from the final against Real Madrid, linking them visually across the picture. There are 19 individual portraits in the painting plus more than a dozen mini portraits within the goalmouths, St Clair and open top bus scenes. My finished collage of painted images aims to convey the success and celebration after such a great win. I wanted to paint the definitive Gothenburg picture with all the elements - the players, the fans and the goals and I also wanted to include all the now famous, almost iconic images eg Willie Miller holding the trophy aloft in one hand, the toothless Doug Rougvie grin, Gordon Strachan's V for victory sign and of course the John Hewitt leap after scoring that fabulous winning goal! I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole artistic process from the drawing and painting of the original through to the design, reprographics and printing of the limited edition print.
